Earth Day – Who Said You Can’t Change the World?

Earth Day is an annual event dedicated to celebrating the environment and raising public awareness about the pollution of our planet. It is held every year on 22nd April, when various events are organised worldwide to highlight the importance of environmental protection.

The idea of protecting the Earth first emerged in 1969 at a UNESCO conference in San Francisco, following a major oil spill and the environmental damage that followed in its aftermath. On the first Earth Day, initiated by American university student Denis Hayes, twenty million Americans stood up for nature on 22nd April, 1970. This historically significant event triggered major changes worldwide. Twenty years later, Hayes and his team intensified their efforts to raise awareness about the increasing destruction of the biosphere, environmental damage, and ocean pollution.

Over the years, more and more people have joined the movement, including participation in Earth Hour, which takes place every year on the last Saturday of March. During this time, lights are turned off around the world, plunging the planet into symbolic darkness.

Today, Earth Day remains an important occasion for raising awareness and informing the public about environmental issues. Around the globe, meetings, seminars, and conferences are held on this day to address these challenges. And finally, let us not forget: we only have one Earth, so we must take care of it responsibly!
